Thousands of works from Damien Hirst’s Currency series that the artist said were “handmade in 2016” were mass-produced several years after.
I have been collecting stuff since…forever. Nothing special, magazines at first, which I used to cut and pin to a wall (comprised of cork) in my Long Island childhood bedroom; and, later all things art. Before moving from New York to London in 2004—I came back in 2019—I dumped all my archives, artworks and collection into storage, now one of a few. Admittedly not the most organized, there was little or no catalogued inventory of the contents (nor is there of my present UK warehouse, ugh).
The concept of kennyslist ☮️, loosely based on craigslist, was to begin the slow, very slow process of digging out from the morass. I contacted the storage company and instructed them to fill a truck with a chunk of the contents, including as much of the material marked “undetermined”. Frighteningly, an 18-foot truckload later, I haven’t much made a dent in the initial pile, but it’s a start.
What I uncovered, and still in the process of discovering, is ephemera relating to nearly 35 years of curating itinerate group shows, a large portion of the first decade of my own art making (a show-within-a-show will also be on view), and nearly 300 works from a cross-section of artists I worked with at the time, 1991-2003. Some of those artists are unknown (even to me!), others since deceased, and the majority going strong to this day.
Was I impulsive? Unambiguously. Compulsive? Persistently so, which unfortunately continues to this day. In essence, nothing’s changed since I was the alienated kid holed up in my suburban bedroom. Don’t fear that this enterprise will in any manner preclude the next Hoarder sale, the 5th iteration of the series of yearly no-reserve auctions at Sotheby’s in December 2023. The aphorism rings true—you can’t change a dog’s spots, nor rid this old hound of older habits.
